Pep Guardiola Commends Phil Foden
Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has commended forward Phil Foden for his candor regarding mental health struggles that affected him during the previous season. Foden has emerged as a prominent figure in the early stages of the current season, contributing two goals and a pair of assists in seven matches, though this performance was insufficient to secure a place in England’s squad, selected by coach Thomas Tuchel on Friday.
Foden’s Recovery and Performance
As Manchester City prepares for a return to Brentford, one of Guardiola’s favored venues, Foden appears to have regained his form. Last season, Foden recorded 13 goals and seven assists from 49 appearances, a notable decline compared to his remarkable tally of 27 goals and 13 assists from 53 games the prior season. In May, he had openly shared the challenges he faced, stating:
“There were a lot of personal matters affecting me mentally. Some issues in life are more significant than football.”
Reflecting on Foden’s recovery, Guardiola remarked:
“It’s impressive how he acknowledges his struggles. Someone of Phil’s stature being candid can resonate deeply with young people and adults alike, reminding us that everyone faces such battles. Recognizing this reality is remarkable. Currently, what stands out for me is not just his high level of play—in training, his attitude, laughter, and presence in the locker room show he is back, and that alone is what we seek. The emphasis is on his well-being over performance; after all, what truly matters is his health and happiness with family and himself. I’m pleased to see him improving step by step, contributing in many ways on the pitch.”
Foden’s Role and Future Speculations
With the exit of Kevin De Bruyne this summer, Foden’s role this season has gained even more importance, particularly in cultivating his partnership with Erling Haaland. City supporters are keen to see this alliance flourish. Meanwhile, rumors continue to circulate about Barcelona’s interest in Haaland, with club president Joan Laporta reportedly fixated on acquiring the star forward next summer, despite Haaland’s long-term contract with City.
Guardiola addressed these speculations, stating:
“Which club wouldn’t want Erling Haaland? I completely understand Barcelona’s admiration for him, as would every club globally. If Erling were to leave us, it would be unimaginable for City not to want to keep him. I don’t know what the future holds; all I know is that he has a lengthy contract and is performing outstandingly, finding net success with significant support from the team. Erling is astute enough to sign a contract in line with his goals. Nevertheless, in football, the future is uncertain; we cannot predict what will transpire next.”
