Grealish’s Absence from Manchester City’s Club World Cup Squad Expected Amidst Uncertain Future

Jack Grealish’s Current Situation

Jack Grealish may not be part of Manchester City’s lineup for the upcoming Club World Cup, which is set to take place in the United States later this month. The 29-year-old winger has had a challenging season, participating in only 20 Premier League matches and securing a spot in the starting XI just seven times. He was notably absent from City’s final league match, where they clinched a 2-0 victory over Fulham, and remained on the bench during their FA Cup final defeat to Crystal Palace in May.

Manager’s Comments

Manager Pep Guardiola clarified that the choice to exclude Grealish from the squad against Fulham was not a personal decision, emphasizing that discussions would be held with Grealish’s representatives regarding his future with the team during the summer.

Grealish’s Career at Manchester City

Since joining Manchester City in 2021 from Aston Villa for a record transfer fee of £100 million, Grealish has made 157 appearances, netting 17 goals and contributing 23 assists. He played a vital role in City’s historic treble-winning season in 2022-23, participating in their first Champions League triumph. Guardiola has expressed his wish to see Grealish recapture the form that helped the club secure the treble, stating,

“I want the Jack that won the treble. I know he can do it because I’ve seen his potential.”

Early Career and National Team Experience

A product of Aston Villa’s youth academy, Grealish made his senior debut in 2014 after a loan at Notts County. He served as Villa’s captain starting in 2019 and was instrumental in their return to the Premier League after a period of relegation. With 39 caps for England, his last appearance was in a 3-1 Nations League victory over Finland in October, under interim coach Lee Carsley. However, he has yet to receive a call-up from Thomas Tuchel, the new head coach.

Upcoming Matches

Manchester City is scheduled to begin their Club World Cup campaign against Wydad AC on June 18, followed by matches against Al Ain on June 22 and Juventus on June 26, as part of Group G.
