Gotham GC takes down Boston Legacy in inaugural match with 1-0 win; Kansas City Current bounces back against Utah Royals

Boston Legacy vs. Gotham GC

In the inaugural match for the expansion team Boston Legacy, Gotham GC emerged with a slim 1-0 victory, thanks to a goal from Esther González in the 55th minute. The match, held at Gillette Stadium, attracted a remarkable crowd of 30,207, setting a record for attendance at an expansion club’s debut in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

Match Highlights

The Legacy, under the guidance of coach Filipa Patão, opted for a defensive strategy, employing a five-back formation that saw Bianca St-Georges shifted into a central defender role. However, her game took a turn as she received a yellow card in the 40th minute and was later ejected with a second yellow in the 77th minute, leaving her team at a disadvantage.

González, who came off the bench during the match, capitalized on a defensive error when St-Georges failed to clear the ball, firing it directly to the forward who scored just 10 minutes after entering the game. Overall, the match was marked by a total of 33 fouls, with officials issuing seven yellow cards and one red card.

Kansas City Current vs. Utah Royals

Meanwhile, another NWSL clash saw the Kansas City Current bouncing back into form with a 2-1 comeback victory against the Utah Royals. The Royals initially took the lead when defender Tatumn Milazzo scored from a corner kick in the 35th minute, courtesy of Cloé Lacasse’s assist.

However, the Current responded decisively, opening their scoring with a goal from Croix Bethune in the 57th minute, coincidentally on her birthday. Ally Sentnor followed up with the game-winner in the 69th minute after weaving through multiple defenders.

The Current were without their star forward Temwa Chawinga, the two-time NWSL MVP, who is currently sidelined with an adductor injury sustained in October, impacting their lineup significantly as they sought to defend their 2025 NWSL shield title.
