Goran Ivanisevic Advocates for Djokovic’s Resilience Despite Recent Grand Slam Challenges

Optimism for Djokovic’s Future

Former coach Goran Ivanisevic remains optimistic about Novak Djokovic‘s potential to clinch another Grand Slam title, despite the Serbian star’s struggles since the 2023 US Open. The thrice-time Wimbledon champion has had an unexpectedly dry spell without a major title, making this season, particularly heading into Wimbledon 2025, critical.

Historical Context

Historically, Djokovic has missed out on winning a Grand Slam in just two seasons since 2011: 2017 and 2024. The looming possibility of not winning at Wimbledon this year would see him matching his longest streak without a championship—raising concerns among fans and analysts alike.

Ivanisevic’s Insights

However, Ivanisevic believes that the situation is not as dire as it appears. Currently coaching Stefanos Tsitsipas, Ivanisevic had the opportunity to observe Djokovic closely during practice sessions. In a recent interview with Sasa Ozmo from CLAY, the Croatian expressed enjoyment in watching Djokovic’s training. He noted:

“The other day, he and Tsitsipas were on the court together, and it was a pleasure to witness. I used to be so focused as his coach that I didn’t appreciate his game fully. He moves with such grace, and every shot is delivered with incredible speed thanks to his impeccable technique.”

Future Aspirations

Djokovic has hinted at aspirations to compete in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and according to Ivanisevic, the prospect is feasible given the way Djokovic is playing. He stated:

“If we consider his performance now, he’s in excellent shape for a potential run at the Olympics. The real question is his motivation, especially at 38. However, he seems adept at managing the pressure, although nerves can sometimes impact his performance.”

Recent Challenges

The former champion has faced challenges in the last Grand Slam events, having been eliminated in the semifinals of 2024’s Australian Open and experiencing withdrawal before the quarter-finals of the French Open. His performances at Wimbledon and the US Open have also been disappointing, with a finals loss at Wimbledon and exiting in the third round of the US Open.

Looking Ahead

Despite these setbacks, Ivanisevic feels that Djokovic still has a shot at winning Grand Slam titles this season and beyond:

“It’s not over for him. He can still contend at the US Open later this year. I firmly believe that had he not been injured in Melbourne, he would have defeated Zverev, and a final against Sinner would have been a compelling match.”

Ivanisevic is therefore confident that there are still opportunities ahead for the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
