Gonzaga Advances to 29th Consecutive WCC Championship by Defeating Oregon State 65-56

Gonzaga Bulldogs Secure Spot in WCC Tournament Finals

In a decisive matchup in Las Vegas, the Gonzaga Bulldogs, currently ranked 12th, triumphed over Oregon State with a score of 65-56 on Monday evening, securing their place in the West Coast Conference (WCC) Tournament finals for the 29th consecutive year. This victory marks Gonzaga’s 29th win of the season, bringing their overall record to an impressive 29-3. They are set to confront either No. 21 Saint Mary’s or Santa Clara in the championship game, with both teams competing later that night. This tournament marks the Bulldogs’ final participation in the WCC, as they prepare to join the Pac-12 Conference next season.

Key Player Performance

Graham Ike stood out as a key player for the Bulldogs, contributing significantly to their win with 24 points and 11 rebounds, achieving his 14th double-double of the season and the 45th of his career. Despite being the sole Gonzaga player to reach double digits in scoring, his performance was crucial in maintaining the team’s lead, as they never trailed throughout the game. For Oregon State, Jorge Diaz Graham scored 15 points, while Noah Amenhauser added 11, but it wasn’t enough to change the course of the game.

Offensive and Defensive Dominance

Gonzaga showcased their offensive prowess, particularly in the paint, where they outscored Oregon State 38-24. The Bulldogs, who lead the nation in scoring average within the lane at 45.2 points per game, also dominated in transition, outpacing the Beavers 16-0 on fast breaks. Defensively, Gonzaga’s presence was evident early on, forcing numerous turnovers—including 10-second and shot clock violations—contributing to a strong 15-2 run in the first half, which set the tone for the game as they built a substantial 21-6 lead.

Oregon State’s Struggles

Oregon State, which concluded its season with a record of 17-16 under the leadership of recently dismissed head coach Wayne Tinkle, struggled in the initial half, shooting a mere 28.6% and missing their first nine attempts from the field. Although the Beavers found some rhythm in the second half, the outcome remained largely in favor of Gonzaga, who marked only the second time this season that Oregon State lost a game when holding their opponent to under 70 points.

Looking Ahead

The journey continues for Gonzaga as they eye another WCC title amidst their shift to a new conference.
