Glen Gulutzan Returns as Head Coach of the Dallas Stars
In a significant turnaround for the Dallas Stars, Glen Gulutzan has returned as head coach, eager to apply the lessons he learned during his lengthy absence from the role. After a 12-year hiatus filled with varied coaching experiences, Gulutzan is stepping up to lead the Stars as they head into the playoffs. General Manager Jim Nill emphasized that Gulutzan’s journey has equipped him with crucial insights that are now evident in his coaching style.
Team Performance and Playoff Outlook
At the age of 54, Gulutzan takes charge of a team that has achieved remarkable success, closing the regular season with a record of 50 wins, 20 losses, and 12 overtime losses, accumulating a total of 112 points—marking the Stars’ third consecutive season with at least 50 victories. They will face off against division rivals, the Minnesota Wild, in their playoff opener this Saturday.
The decision to rehire Gulutzan came after the Stars parted ways with Pete DeBoer, despite his tenure leading the team to three straight appearances in the Western Conference finals. Nill saw in Gulutzan a chance to reinvigorate the coaching staff following a series of playoff disappointments, particularly given Gulutzan’s extensive experience in the NHL, which includes a history of 947 regular-season games and a further 93 in the playoffs.
Coaching Experience and Previous Tenure
Before his reappointment, Gulutzan honed his skills over the years, serving as an assistant with notable coaches such as John Tortorella, Ken Hitchcock, and Dave Tippett. His most recent position was as an assistant with the Edmonton Oilers, where he played a key role in the team’s playoff runs that saw them reach the Stanley Cup Final twice and eliminate the Stars in the Western Conference finals.
Gulutzan initially coached the Stars back in 2011, during a tumultuous time for the franchise marked by bankruptcy and management shake-ups. His first tenure saw mixed results—42 wins in his debut season followed by a .500 record in a lockout-shortened second year—leading to his dismissal when Nill was appointed and chose to not renew Gulutzan’s contract.
Current Team Dynamics and Momentum
Upon stepping back into the role, Gulutzan finds himself leading a team that maintains much of its core roster, which includes Jamie Benn, the team’s captain. Veteran player Matt Duchene acknowledged the solid foundation that DeBoer laid, which has allowed Gulutzan to refine strategies and adapt this year. Players like Wyatt Johnston have praised Gulutzan’s hockey acumen, noting that his adjustments have made the team more dynamic and effective.
Currently, the organization is riding a wave of momentum, as they recently had a record-setting 10-game winning streak and have now added five more victories following it. In sharp contrast to last season’s struggles, where they faced a challenging seven-game losing streak heading into the playoffs, Gulutzan sees a noticeable shift in the players’ focus and mindset as they prepare for the postseason. As the Stars gear up for their playoff journey, their newfound energy and determination may very well chart a different course from the past disappointments.
