Gio Reyna Makes Move to Borussia Mönchengladbach from Borussia Dortmund

Gio Reyna Transfers to Borussia Mönchengladbach

Gio Reyna, the American midfielder, has officially moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach after completing a transfer from Bundesliga competitor Borussia Dortmund, as confirmed by both clubs on Saturday. The 22-year-old has agreed to a three-year deal that will keep him at Gladbach until the summer of 2028, marking a significant shift in his career following a challenging stint at Dortmund, where he made his professional debut after progressing from the academy of New York City FC.

Challenges Faced at Dortmund

Reyna’s transition comes as he looks to revive his career after facing obstacles such as injuries and limited playing time, which kept him from fully realizing his potential. In his last season with Dortmund, Reyna started only three matches in the Bundesliga and spent the latter half of the previous season on loan at Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. Despite being part of the Dortmund squad that reached the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup over the summer, he managed to feature for just 12 minutes as a substitute.

Impact on National Team

This limited involvement led to him being omitted from the U.S. men’s national team roster for the Concacaf Gold Cup, where his absence was felt. The son of former U.S. international Claudio Reyna, Gio has earned 32 caps and netted eight goals for his country. As he aims to reclaim his spot in the national team ahead of the World Cup next summer, where matches will be hosted across the United States, he is optimistic that his new environment at Gladbach will rejuvenate his playing career.

Looking Ahead with Gladbach

Gladbach, who ended the previous Bundesliga season in 10th place, will be looking to enhance their performance this year, starting with their opening match against Hamburg on Sunday.

“Gio arrives with a wealth of experience though he is still young and brimming with potential,” stated Roland Virkus, the sporting managing director at Borussia. “We have kept an eye on him for some time, and we are confident he possesses the essential skills to make a significant impact on the field. He is already well-acquainted with the Bundesliga and can adapt to various attacking roles.”
