Ginjiro Shigeoka’s Recovery
Ginjiro Shigeoka, the former IBF strawweight champion, is currently recovering at a private hospital in Osaka, Japan, following a craniotomy after a recent bout against Pedro Taduran. This surgical procedure, which involves removing a section of the skull for brain surgery, was necessitated by Shigeoka suffering from an acute subdural hematoma—an alarming condition characterized by the accumulation of blood between the brain and its outer layer. Shigeoka, 25, collapsed in the ring after a controversial split decision was announced, requiring immediate medical attention as he was wheeled out on a stretcher.
Previous Incidents
This unfortunate incident marks the second time Shigeoka has fainted post-fight against Taduran; he also lost consciousness following their first encounter in July, which he lost via a ninth-round stoppage after sustaining a painful orbital bone fracture. Although he underwent surgery for this injury and was cleared to fight again, this latest setback is likely to end his boxing career.
Regulatory Implications
As per the regulations established by the Japanese Boxing Commission, any fighter who undergoes brain surgery is prohibited from competing, effectively mandating Shigeoka’s retirement from the sport.
In a post on Facebook, Viva Promotions confirmed Shigeoka’s condition, stating, “G. Shigeoka is still currently under observation… The commission has already enforced that Shigeoka has to retire from boxing following his craniotomy procedure.”
Career Highlights
Shigeoka was known for his impressive amateur record of 56 wins against just a single defeat, which occurred against his own brother, Yudai, when their corner decided to withdraw from the bout. Turning professional in 2018, he enjoyed an undefeated streak of 11 bouts with 9 knockouts, culminating in a knockout victory over Daniel Valladares to capture the IBF strawweight title in 2023. He successfully defended this title before facing Taduran.
Sean Gibbons from Viva Promotions expressed his support for Shigeoka, stating, “We send our prayers for Ginjiro Shigeoka. He showed tremendous heart, the will to win, and never gave up. He is a true warrior.”
