Gilberto Ramírez’s Indefinite Break After Shoulder Surgery

Gilberto Ramírez Takes Hiatus Following Shoulder Surgery

Gilberto Ramírez, the current unified world cruiserweight boxing champion holding titles from the WBA and WBO, is set to take a hiatus from the ring following recent shoulder surgery. His management, Golden Boy Promotions, confirmed the procedure took place on Saturday, although details about which shoulder was operated on remain undisclosed. This surgical intervention is the result of an injury sustained during Ramírez’s last bout—a unanimous decision victory over former world champion Yuniel Dorticos on June 28 in Anaheim.

Decision for Surgery

The 34-year-old Mexican athlete expressed his decision to undergo surgery after consulting with three medical professionals and reflecting on the implications for his health and career.

“Dealing with this injury since the last fight was challenging, and continuing to push through it wasn’t wise for my future in boxing,”

stated Ramírez. He remarked,

“Surgery isn’t something any fighter wants to hear, but this is the right call to ensure that I heal properly and return at full strength.”

Focus on Rehabilitation

While the timeline for his return remains uncertain, Ramírez is focused on rehabilitation, stating that he will remain dedicated to his therapy as he aims to recover fully.

“I’ll return stronger, sharper, and more determined than I have ever been,”

he affirmed.

Career Highlights

With a record of 47 wins, including 30 knockouts, and only one loss, Ramírez claimed the WBA title with a unanimous decision against Armenian-French boxer Arsen Goulamirian in March 2024, and completed his title collection with a victory over England’s Chris Billam-Smith for the WBO belt the prior November in Saudi Arabia. Fans and boxing colleagues are now looking forward to his comeback after this necessary pause for recovery.
