Gerome Warburton Eyes World Title After Remarkable Victory Over Nathan Heaney

Gerome Warburton’s Career Turning Point

Welsh middleweight boxer Gerome Warburton is reflecting on a significant turning point in his career after achieving a remarkable victory against former British champion Nathan Heaney. Winning the WBA Continental Middleweight title in March at the Co-Op Live Arena in Manchester, Warburton expressed disbelief over his potential ascension towards a world title bout, stating,

“It’s madness to think I could be so close to that.”

Unexpected Triumph

At just 30 years old and hailing from Colwyn Bay, Warburton’s triumph over Heaney was unexpected, particularly given the intense atmosphere created by over 2,000 fans supporting his opponent within a crowd of 15,000. Initially scheduled for January, the bout was postponed due to an injury involving heavyweight Moses Itauma, leading to heightened anticipation surrounding Warburton’s eventual showdown with Heaney.

“I knew this fight would not be easy,” Warburton commented, acknowledging the overwhelming support Heaney received, which positioned him as the underdog.

“From the moment I arrived at the hotel and participated in the weigh-in and press conference, I was fully focused; I realized I could not afford to lose this opportunity.”

Dedication and Family

Celebrating in the aftermath, Warburton dedicated his victory to his son, Roman, who proudly hoisted the championship belt.

“To him, it must feel unreal seeing his dad succeed in such a grand setting — more akin to a fairytale than reality,”

Warburton shared.

The boxer, who entered the professional ring in 2019 and claimed the Welsh middleweight title just three years after, has experienced his fair share of challenges, including a loss to Kieron Conway for the British middleweight title in May 2025. Currently, Warburton has secured 17 wins out of 21 fights and is now ranked 11th globally by the WBA.

Inspiration and Future Plans

Demonstrating humility through his journey, Warburton emphasizes the importance of hard work, stating,

“I’m a firm believer that dedication can take you far, regardless of your initial talent level. I aim to inspire the younger generation in all fields, not just boxing, by showing them what is achievable with effort and perseverance.”

As he contemplates his future in the sport, Warburton has made it clear he will patiently evaluate his options regarding upcoming fights.

“I plan to discuss potential opportunities with my management to ensure the next steps align with my career goals. It’s vital to make wise choices and avoid entering the ring at the wrong time, so I’m not rushing to make any calls out just yet.”

The Breadmaker

On a lighter note, Warburton humorously addressed the origin of his nickname, “The Breadmaker,” created by a former coach, remarking,

“Some may see it as cheeky, but it feels fitting for me. This name embodies my journey, and I believe there is much more to achieve as The Breadmaker.”
