Georgia Women’s Basketball Triumphs Over Florida

In a decisive showdown on Sunday, the 23rd-ranked University of Georgia women’s basketball team triumphed over Florida with a score of 71-58, marking a successful conclusion to their regular season. Dani Carnegie was instrumental in the victory, contributing an impressive 26 points, while teammate Mia Woolfolk added a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Game Highlights

The Bulldogs started strong, with Carnegie rapidly scoring the initial eight points of the game. They took an early lead, going up 16-7 before the Gators managed their first field goal with less than two minutes to go in the opening quarter. Florida struggled offensively, attempting only six shots and relying heavily on free throws, converting seven out of ten. At the end of the first quarter, Georgia held an 18-9 advantage.

Florida began to find their rhythm in the second quarter, courtesy of Emilija Dakic, who sunk two three-pointers that sparked a solid run. The Gators evened the score at 23 with four minutes left in the half. However, Georgia responded with a powerful 12-0 surge, led by Carnegie and Riley Theuerkauf, both contributing five points to secure a 35-23 lead at halftime.

The third quarter saw Georgia extend their dominance with a remarkable 13-0 run, highlighted by two three-pointers from Savannah Henderson and another by Carnegie, pushing the score to 54-30. The Bulldogs carried a 54-33 lead into the final quarter.

In the last period, Carnegie added six more points while Woolfolk chipped in with seven, ensuring that Georgia maintained control throughout and ending the game unbeaten on their home court.

Florida’s Performance

For Florida, Nyadieng Yiech led the team with 14 points, and Jade Weathersby excelled on the boards, snatching up 11 rebounds. The setback leaves the Gators with a season record of 17 wins and 14 losses overall and 5-11 in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

Looking Ahead

With this victory, Georgia has achieved a remarkable turnaround, finishing the season with a record of 22-8, a significant improvement from their previous season’s 13-19 record, making it the best turnaround in the program’s history.

Looking ahead, Georgia will participate in the SEC tournament scheduled to take place from Wednesday to Sunday in Greenville, South Carolina.
