Gavi Addresses Criticism
In a candid interview, Barcelona midfielder Gavi expressed frustration towards those who criticize his playing style, asserting that many fail to recognize his footballing talent beyond his competitive nature. The 20-year-old player made headlines for his remarks in April, emphasizing that while he is often seen as a fierce competitor, his skills with the ball deserve more recognition.
“Many people overlook my quality as a footballer because they’re focused on my tenacity on the field,” Gavi remarked in a discussion with Mundo Deportivo, coinciding with his recall to the Spanish national team for the upcoming UEFA Nations League finals.
He continued,
“I get it that my style might not appeal to everyone, and perhaps some find it less entertaining, but it’s discouraging that my abilities with the ball are undervalued by so many. They truly have no insight into my footballing capabilities. However, as long as those knowledgeable about the game appreciate my skills, I won’t let the criticism get to me.”
Recovery and National Team Selection
Gavi’s recent selection for the Spain squad comes after a challenging recovery from an ACL injury sustained in 2023, which sidelined him for nearly a year. Prior to this setback, he had quickly become a key player for Spain, earning 27 caps since debuting at just 17 under former coach Luis Enrique.
Reflecting on his past experiences, Gavi expressed profound gratitude to Enrique, who recently celebrated a Champions League victory with Paris Saint-Germain.
“To me, he’s the best coach out there. I’m thrilled for his success. He gave me my first chance with the national team during a game at the San Siro against Italy, the reigning European champions at that time. That day is unforgettable, and it took a lot of courage for him to put me in amidst swirling criticism,” shared Gavi.
Commitment to Barcelona
Amid speculations linking him to a potential move to PSG due to his close relationship with Enrique, Gavi dismissed these rumors firmly, affirming his commitment to Barcelona, having signed a contract with the club extending until 2030.
“I have no intention of leaving; I hope to spend my entire career at Barça,” he stated.
Since making his comeback to first-team duties at Barcelona last October, Gavi has featured 42 times this season, although many of those appearances have come as substitutes. His determined attitude reflects his ambitions to solidify his place both at his club and in international football, proving that he is more than just a passionate player.
