Galatasaray Pursues Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji and Ederson Amid Transfer Speculation

Galatasaray Eyes Manuel Akanji

Sources reveal that Galatasaray is eyeing Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji as a potential addition to their squad. The Turkish club has initiated discussions with City regarding the Swiss defender’s possible transfer. While City hasn’t completely dismissed the idea of Akanji’s exit from the Etihad, they maintain that such a move would only occur if their financial expectations are met.

Akanji’s Role at Manchester City

Akanji, who joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, has become an essential player for coach Pep Guardiola, with two years remaining on his current contract. Galatasaray is on the lookout for both a new defender and a goalkeeper ahead of the Turkish Super Lig’s transfer deadline on September 12. The club aims to have new signings finalized in time to submit their squad for the Champions League registration by September 2.

Defensive Versatility

Okan Buruk, the head coach, seeks a versatile defender capable of covering both positions as a centre-back and right-back. Akanji has demonstrated this flexibility under Guardiola, notably starting in the right-back role during the 2023 Champions League final, despite primarily playing as a centre-back.

Goalkeeper Considerations

In addition to Akanji, Galatasaray also has its sights set on City’s goalkeeper Ederson. Although City prefers to retain the Brazilian, they could permit his departure should he express a desire to leave. Ederson’s absence from the match against Wolves, where they triumphed 4-0, was due to illness, allowing newcomer James Trafford, who rejoined from Burnley this summer, to step in as goalkeeper.

Alternative Options

Should a transfer for Ederson be unsuccessful, Galatasaray has other candidates in mind, including Diogo Costa from FC Porto and Yann Sommer of Inter Milan. Meanwhile, if Ederson were to depart, Manchester City might redirect their focus towards Gianluigi Donnarumma, as Paris Saint-Germain has made the Italian goalkeeper available after his replacement by Lucas Chevalier as their starting goalkeeper.
