Galatasaray Keeping an Eye on Ilkay Gündogan at Manchester City, Sources Indicate

Galatasaray’s Interest in Ilkay Gündogan

Galatasaray is closely observing the circumstances surrounding Ilkay Gündogan‘s tenure at Manchester City, as reported by sources affiliated with ESPN. Should the opportunity arise, the Turkish club is ready to pursue the skilled midfielder this summer. Currently, Gündogan’s contract with City extends until 2026 due to an option that was activated last season.

Competition at Manchester City

At 34, Gündogan is a key member of Pep Guardiola’s squad, participating in the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. Nevertheless, his position within the team faces challenges, particularly with the recent addition of Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan and Rodri‘s return from injury, enhancing competition within the midfield.

Insiders have shared with ESPN that Galatasaray’s management believes Gündogan would be inclined to transfer to Istanbul if he is granted the opportunity to leave the Etihad Stadium later this summer. Aside from Gündogan, Galatasaray is also on the lookout for a full-back, with a particular interest in re-signing Sacha Boey from Bayern Munich. The midfielder has significant ties to Turkey and seems amenable to a career closing chapter in the Turkish league.

Leadership Changes and Experience

Gündogan, who captained Manchester City during their treble-winning season in 2023, was omitted from the leadership roster last season after his return from a spell at Barcelona. Ahead of the upcoming season, he finds himself once again outside of the leadership group, which now includes Bernardo Silva, Rúben Dias, Rodri, and Erling Haaland.

“Experienced players are essential on the pitch,” he expressed. “During my early years, I looked up to seasoned players—just observing their actions taught me a lot. Young athletes benefit from having experienced teammates, understanding that often it’s not about working harder, but smarter.”

As he approaches his 35th birthday this October, Gündogan remains a firm believer in the importance of veteran players in high-level football.
