NHL Draft Overview
In the landscape of NHL drafting, the Buffalo Sabres find themselves in an enviable position as many teams remain wary of recruiting shorter players despite their demonstrated speed and talent. This was particularly evident at the 2023 NHL Draft held in Nashville, where first overall pick Connor Bedard was taken by the Chicago Blackhawks, followed by Anaheim selecting Leo Carlsson, Columbus opting for Adam Fantilli, and San Jose acquiring Will Smith, all centers. This created a unique situation for the Sabres, who benefitted from an impressive talent pool beyond the top ten selections, later clinching winger Zach Benson at the 13th overall pick.
Player Highlights
Benson, who defied expectations by making the NHL roster straight from junior hockey—without even a stint in the WHL or AHL—has already emerged as an impactful player, with only Bedard and Fantilli surpassing his games played since entering the league.
Post-Draft Roster Developments
The Sabres’ roster developments post-2023 draft include several notable prospects:
Anton Wahlberg (C, 39th overall): The 20-year-old forward joined the Rochester Americans towards the end of the 2024 season, contributing during the Calder Cup playoffs against Syracuse. Weighing in at 6’4” and 205 pounds, Wahlberg posted 30 points (11 goals and 19 assists) across 63 games in his first full season. However, he faced challenges in the playoffs, registering no points in six appearances after recovering from an illness. His scoring marginally increased to 38 points in 68 games this last season, but he saw a dip in goal production, netting only nine. Given the likelihood of losing experienced forwards Alex Tuch and Beck Malenstyn to free agency, Wahlberg could see some time in the NHL this upcoming season.
Maxim Strbak (D, 45th overall): The 21-year-old defenseman, known for his right-handed shots, has represented Slovakia at four World Junior Championships and signed with the Sabres following his junior year at Michigan State, where he tallied 18 points (3 goals, 15 assists) in 37 games. Strbak made a brief appearance with the Amerks at season’s end and is anticipated to be a primary defenseman in Rochester next year under coach Michael Leone.
Gavin McCarthy (D, 86th overall): A local talent from Western New York, McCarthy honed his skills with the Buffalo Jr. Sabres before playing two years with the Muskegon Lumberjacks. At Boston University, he celebrated a successful freshman year by reaching the Frozen Four and built on that success during his sophomore year, recording 16 points (3 goals, 13 assists) across 39 games. This past season, he achieved a career-best 21 points (4 goals, 17 assists) in just 36 games and subsequently signed his entry-level contract with the Sabres, featuring in five games with Rochester.
