Historic Heavyweight Match in Discussion
Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua are in discussions to potentially headline a historic heavyweight match at Croke Park, Dublin, come September. With an impressive capacity of 80,000, the venue is renowned for its significance in Gaelic sports, making it a fitting location for such a marquee event.
Conditions for the Match
However, the match’s viability hinges on Fury successfully winning his upcoming fight against Arslanbek Makhmudov in London this Saturday, coupled with Joshua’s decision to forgo a preliminary bout during the summer months.
Recent Events Affecting the Fighters
Joshua recently resumed his training following a severe car accident in Nigeria that tragically claimed the lives of two of his close friends, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Meanwhile, Fury hasn’t stepped into the ring since his last match in December 2024, while Joshua’s most recent fight was against Jake Paul, which also took place in December. If Joshua opts for a warm-up fight, the highly anticipated showdown could be pushed to later in the year, possibly taking place in the UK.
CEO’s Enthusiasm and Future Prospects
Peter McKenna, CEO of Croke Park, expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of hosting the Fury-Joshua bout and suggested that this could pave the way for Irish boxing legend Katie Taylor to realize her dream of fighting in the iconic stadium.
“The real hope is that we will get Tyson Fury here later on in the year. That would be such a world-billing event that we would be able to facilitate a Katie Taylor fight here,”
McKenna stated, acknowledging the numerous logistical agreements needed among the fighters’ management teams.
Financial Backing and Challenges
A long-discussed super bout has faced previous obstacles related to financial terms and broadcasting disagreements. This particular event would find substantial backing from Sela, a production company owned by Saudi interests, and prominent promoter Turki Alalshikh of Zuffa Boxing. Despite this, Fury has maintained his desire to face Joshua next but has confirmed that no formal agreements have yet been finalized.
Katie Taylor’s Aspirations
Katie Taylor, a two-time undisputed champion at 39 years of age, has fought in Dublin before but has yet to land a match at Croke Park. Financial considerations regarding upfront security costs have previously hindered these ambitions, but Fury’s and Joshua’s marquee status could eliminate that concern, should Taylor also be included in the fight card. Taylor has openly stated her aspiration to conclude her career in Dublin, and with this new development, that dream may soon come to fruition.
Looking Ahead
As talks progress, the boxing community eagerly awaits updates that could set the stage for an unforgettable event in Irish sports history. BBC Sport has reached out to Taylor’s team for additional comments.
