Furman Paladins Clinch Southern Conference Title
In a decisive victory on Monday night, the Furman Paladins, seeded sixth, triumphed over top-seeded East Tennessee State Buccaneers with a score of 76-61 to clinch the Southern Conference Tournament title and secure their spot in the NCAA Tournament. This marks Furman’s eighth SoCon title and their first since overcoming Chattanooga last season, bringing their record to 22-12 for the year.
Standout Performers
The standout player of the match was Cooper Bowser, who contributed significantly with 21 points and 11 rebounds, shooting impressively at 75% from the floor (9 of 12). Fellow teammate Tom House stepped up with 13 points coming off the bench, while Alex Wilkins, who had shined in the semifinals with a career-best 34 points, added another 12 points to the scoreboard.
Game Highlights
Furman jumped out to a strong first half, leading 42-35 at halftime, bolstered by House’s sixth 3-pointer which extended their early advantage to 37-27. Wilkins was also pivotal in the late game, making a crucial steal followed by a breakaway dunk that pushed the lead to 72-61 with just over two minutes left. Bowser then sealed the deal with a hook shot that widened the margin to 13 points, effectively quashing any comeback hopes from the Buccaneers.
ETSU’s Struggles
For ETSU, which aimed for their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2020, Brian Taylor II was a notable performer, scoring 14 of his total 16 points in the second half. Teammates Blake Barkley and Jaylen Smith added 14 and 10 points respectively. However, the Buccaneers struggled offensively in the closing moments, managing only 2 of 7 from the field during the last five minutes, and finished the game with a disappointing 3 of 16 from three-point range and 10 of 18 from the free-throw line.
Looking Ahead
With this victory, Furman not only celebrates a championship but also a promising opportunity in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
