Ali Farokhmanesh: A New Chapter in Coaching
Ali Farokhmanesh, once a celebrated figure in March Madness history, has taken the helm as the head coach of the Colorado State Rams men’s basketball team. This shift in career came after his remarkable play in the 2010 NCAA tournament, where he became known for his iconic game-winning three-point shot that led Northern Iowa to an unexpected upset against Kansas.
Emotional Beginnings at Colorado State
His arrival at Colorado State, marked by a touching jersey presentation last March, saw him humorously come prepared with tissues for the emotional moment, further illustrating his passion for coaching and the significance of realizing a lifelong dream.
Impressive Start to the Season
In this inaugural season at Colorado State, the Rams have kicked off with an impressive record of 20-10, currently on an eight-game winning streak, demonstrating Farokhmanesh’s potential as a coach. His journey in basketball has roots deep in his childhood, as he grew up surrounded by volleyball coaching—his parents both held coaching positions at various collegiate programs.
From Player to Coach
Although Farokhmanesh faced a challenging path to NCAA recognition, he ultimately showcased his resilience by rising through junior college before making a name for himself at Northern Iowa. After a career overseas in countries like Switzerland and the Netherlands, he realized that coaching was his true calling.
He began his coaching career in earnest as a graduate assistant at Nebraska, leveraging connections and his experiences as a former player. Encouraged by former colleagues who recognized his interpersonal skills, he quickly advanced in the coaching world and later joined the staff at Drake under Niko Medved. Together, they achieved significant success, which paved the way for Farokhmanesh’s promotion to head coach when Medved left for Minnesota last year.
Building a Legacy
Currently, Farokhmanesh aims to shape his legacy within a demanding role, focusing on implementing a style of play that emphasizes ball movement and long-range shooting, reminiscent of his own playing days. His first season has already brought excitement and a renewed sense of hope for fans, particularly after overcoming early-season struggles.
Reflecting on the Past
Reflecting on his past, including the shot that catapulted him to fame, Farokhmanesh expresses pride in his history while focusing on the present as a coach. Despite the challenges ahead, he remains dedicated to building a winning culture at Colorado State and ensuring that his legacy evolves beyond that iconic moment on the court.
As March approaches, the possibilities for both him and the Rams are wide open, suggesting a bright future for this inspiring coach.
