Tennis Dreams and Friendship
In Lafayette, Indiana, McCutcheon High School’s tennis team has two budding stars in juniors Lola Goodrick and Madalyn Cheesman. This dynamic duo’s journey began from very humble beginnings, back in their kindergarten days at Mintonye Elementary School, where they first met. Their friendship blossomed as they teamed up for basketball in third grade, a testament to their bond that has endured through the years.
Competitive Spirit
Both athletes noted their shared competitive nature fuels their success on the court.
“We drive one another to excel, but we also have the desire to outshine each other,”
Goodrick expressed. Cheesman added,
“It’s that internal competition that motivates us to work hard.”
Recent Achievements
Their recent achievements highlight the fruits of their dedication. Last weekend, Goodrick and Cheesman won their first sectional championship, and they are set to compete in the IHSAA regional doubles round this Saturday, June 7, which showcases the significant progress they’ve made in their tennis careers.
Transition to Tennis
Surprisingly, the pair only took up tennis when they entered high school, having prior commitments to volleyball and cross country. However, they were eager to channel their teamwork into tennis, ignited by the desire to show their skills in the state arena. Initially, they started as the fifth doubles team on the junior varsity, regarded as a low level in the competitive tennis hierarchy.
“We just wanted to see how much we could improve, and we knew we’d reach the top eventually,”
Cheesman explained. Goodrick added,
“The love for the game has always been our driving force.”
Commitment to Excellence
Over the seasons, both players have consistently worked on their skills and have grown into a formidable pairing. This year, they made a commitment to elevate their game by starting their training early—beginning in January. Their preparation included lessons at Purdue University and practice sessions at indoor facilities. They even benefited from the expertise of former West Lafayette coach Mike Thiel during winter training, leading them to an impressive record of 22 wins and only 2 losses entering Saturday’s match.
Mindset on the Court
Goodrick reflected on their competitive mindset, stating,
“We never assumed any matches would be easy. Everyone competing at the top level is strong, and we must fight for each point we earn, regardless of the scoreboard.”
A Lasting Bond
While their tennis journey is still unfolding, the bond between Goodrick and Cheesman remains a heartwarming constant, illustrating the power of friendship and determination in the pursuit of excellence in sports.
