Freeman Reveals Soccer Passion Guided His Athletic Decision-Making

Austin Soccer Talent Comes to the Fore

AUSTIN, Texas — In a recent discussion, Alexander Freeman, a 20-year-old fullback for the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) and Orlando City SC, opened up about his passion for soccer, which has flourished despite the family’s football legacy. His father, Antonio Freeman, is a former NFL standout, but it was the sport of soccer that captured Alexander’s heart.

“While growing up, I was frequently asked about following in my father’s footsteps into football, yet I had this hidden passion for soccer that surpassed my interest in any other sport,”

Freeman remarked before a Gold Cup showdown against Saudi Arabia.

Current Season Highlights

Freeman’s current MLS season is noteworthy, having earned spots in the league’s “Team of the Matchday” multiple times, and this year he not only made his debut with the USMNT but also secured a place in the upcoming 2025 Gold Cup. His impressive journey kicked off with a 5-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in the tournament’s first match, where he was part of the starting lineup. Looking ahead, he is poised to start against Saudi Arabia on June 19 at Q2 Stadium.

“What’s happening this year feels like an honor and a true blessing. The 2026 World Cup is definitely something I’m working towards.”

Midfielder’s Aspirations

Meanwhile, midfielder Luca de la Torre is also eyeing a position in the World Cup squad. Currently on loan from LaLiga’s Celta Vigo to San Diego FC, he shared his appreciation for the opportunities that have come from his time with the MLS club.

“I’m really happy in San Diego; it has allowed me to maintain my rhythm and gain the chance to be called up for the national team. As a player, that’s all you can really ask for,”

he stated.

As for his future, de la Torre maintained that it’s premature to make any decisions about his stay with San Diego FC as the World Cup approaches.

“Right now, I’m concentrating on daily training and match opportunities. My time at San Diego has been fantastic—I’ve been able to play a lot and build my fitness, making it a positive situation for me.”

Upcoming Matches

After the upcoming match against Saudi Arabia, the team is scheduled to face Haiti on June 22 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, commanded by head coach Mauricio Pochettino and his squad.
