Frank Vogel Joins the Dallas Mavericks
Frank Vogel is embarking on a new chapter in his coaching career as he joins the Dallas Mavericks‘ coaching lineup, taking on the role of lead assistant to head coach Jason Kidd. This marks a significant transition for Vogel, as he has not held an assistant coaching position since 2011. His collaboration with Kidd isn’t entirely new; Vogel provided consulting assistance to the Mavericks last season, which paved the way for this formal appointment.
Reunion with Anthony Davis
The move also brings Vogel back into close quarters with Anthony Davis, the star player he led to an NBA championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. Vogel’s coaching resume spans over a decade and includes roles with notable teams such as the Indiana Pacers, Orlando Magic, and Phoenix Suns. Despite a commendable 49-33 record with the Suns in the 2023-24 season, he faced a quick exit after just one year.
Significance of the Assistant Role
Vogel’s return to an assistant coaching role is particularly significant, as he previously served under Jim O’Brien during the 2011-12 NBA season with the Pacers. His hiring is part of a busy offseason for the Mavericks, who are reconfiguring their roster and strategy. The team blends experience with youth, featuring established stars such as Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, and Davis, while also looking towards the future with the addition of 18-year-old Cooper Flagg.
Preparing for the Upcoming Season
As the Mavericks prepare for the upcoming season, which will see Irving sidelined for some time due to a knee injury and necessitate shared ballhandling responsibilities with newcomers D’Angelo Russell and Dante Exum, Vogel’s expertise in defensive strategies is anticipated to play a crucial role in shaping the team’s performance.
