Iga Swiatek’s Coaching Controversy
Iga Swiatek’s recent acquisition of Francisco Roig as her coach has sparked controversy due to his abrupt departure from a previous partnership with French player Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Roig, who had earned recognition as an assistant coach to Rafael Nadal for nearly two decades, took over for Swiatek after a troubled coaching spell with Belgian Wim Fissette, who was released following a disappointing early exit at the Miami Open.
Criticism of Coaching Practices
Criticism has arisen over the manner in which Roig terminated his association with Mpetshi Perricard, who only enjoyed a short-lived collaboration of just a few weeks. Instead of directly informing the young player of his decision to move on to Swiatek, Roig relayed the news through Mpetshi Perricard’s agent. This method of communication was frowned upon by tennis commentators and former professionals alike.
“It’s simply disrespectful to go through an agent. You owe it to the player to speak to them directly about such matters,”
Nicholas Monroe, a former American doubles specialist, stated during a podcast.
Co-host Brad Gilbert also critiqued Roig, highlighting his inconsistencies in coaching tenure, recalling how his previous collaborations with players such as Sloane Stephens, Matteo Berrettini, and Emma Raducanu were notably brief.
Mpetshi Perricard’s Response
In an interview with L’Equipe, Mpetshi Perricard himself confirmed the details of the situation, expressing disappointment in Roig’s handling of the termination, and revealing that they planned to train together in Spain after the Miami Open.
“I had faith in his abilities, and it’s unfortunate that the partnership ended so soon. It’s harsh, and I never witnessed this kind of behavior before in my experiences,”
Perricard remarked.
Future Plans for Mpetshi Perricard
The situation was complicated further by the rapid dissemination of training videos showcasing Swiatek working with Roig at the Rafa Nadal Academy shortly after his departure from Mpetshi Perricard. This has led many to suspect that plans for coaching Swiatek may have been in the works prior to Roig’s communication with Mpetshi Perricard.
Currently, Mpetshi Perricard is ranked 56th in the world and is actively seeking to regroup. He has enlisted the help of former British number one Greg Rusedski, known for his offensive playing style, to support his journey forward, along with interim coach Philippe Dehaes.
“Rusedski’s style aligns with my own, especially as a strong server and aggressive player. I believe it’s a positive direction for me,”
Perricard said, looking to the future after this unforeseen disruption.
