Frances Tiafoe Parts Ways with Coaches
Frances Tiafoe, ranked World No. 30, has made the decision to part ways with his coaches David Witt and Jordi Arconada following a disappointing end to his 2023 season in October. During an exhibition match in Charlotte on Friday, Tiafoe candidly explained his motivation behind this significant change in his coaching staff, expressing a need for a fresh start in his career.
“I needed to get uncomfortable and see what happens,” Tiafoe said, indicating that his desire for change extended beyond just Witt and Arconada, as he has let go of additional team members as well. He stated, “I’ve been doing the same thing for a very long time; it’s time for me to explore new avenues.”
Success and Challenges in 2023
Tiafoe, who initially enlisted Witt before the start of the North American hardcourt series in 2024, found success early on, reaching the semifinals at the US Open and Citi Open, as well as the finals at the Cincinnati Masters. Under Witt’s guidance, he made remarkable progress, climbing from No. 29 to No. 11 in the ATP rankings with impressive performances at major events including a quarterfinal appearance at Roland-Garros and a title match in Houston this year.
However, the latter half of the season proved challenging for the American, as he faced early exits at Wimbledon and the US Open, followed by first-round losses in both Japan and Shanghai, prompting his decision to move on from Witt and Arconada.
Tiafoe took to Instagram shortly after announcing the splits, expressing regret over the season’s outcomes but acknowledging the many lessons learned, saying, “It wasn’t the season I hoped for, but lots of lessons learned.”
Looking Ahead
In his message, he also voiced gratitude towards his former team for their dedication and camaraderie, while emphasizing his eagerness to turn the page for his career.
“I’m excited for what’s ahead for me and ready to put the work in. The best is yet to come,” he concluded.
In his recent exhibition match, Tiafoe competed against the highly ranked Taylor Fritz and emerged victorious with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 10-8. His upcoming challenge will be against World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz at an event in New Jersey, as he prepares to embark on this new chapter in his tennis career.
