Semyon Der-Arguchintsev’s Stunning KHL Performance

Semyon Der-Arguchintsev, a former prospect for the Toronto Maple Leafs, demonstrated his remarkable skill during a recent KHL shootout that has grabbed the attention of hockey enthusiasts. On Monday at the Megasport Sport Palace in Moscow, he executed a stunning goal that ultimately clinched a win for Dynamo Moscow against their rivals, Spartak Moscow.

The 25-year-old forward skated in swiftly from center ice towards Spartak’s goalie, Artyom Zagidulin, and produced a breathtaking display of creativity: he pretended to shoot with his forehand, then quickly maneuvered the puck behind his back, slipping it through his legs while spinning to find the net above Zagidulin’s outstretched arm.

Career Highlights and Development

Originally hailing from Moscow, Der-Arguchintsev is celebrated for his exceptional puck-handling and game vision. After an impactful tenure with Traktor Chelyabinsk, he has consistently put up impressive numbers at Dynamo, especially during the ongoing 2025-26 season. His knack for scoring in shootouts has proven beneficial for Dynamo, solidifying his role on the team. However, for fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs, moments like this serve as a bittersweet reminder of what might have transpired had he fully developed his game in the NHL.

Der-Arguchintsev was selected 76th overall by the Maple Leafs in the third round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, showcasing his junior achievements, particularly with the Peterborough Petes in the OHL where he notched 46 points over 62 games in the 2018-19 season. He even made a brief appearance with the Newfoundland Growlers in the ECHL during that season, registering two points in three games.

In the subsequent season (2019-20), his performance further improved as he tallied 75 points in 55 games despite disruptions caused by the pandemic. Following this, he was loaned to Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod in the KHL for the 2020-21 season to gain further international experience. On his return to North America, he participated in six AHL games with the Marlies, collecting four points, before establishing himself as a regular with 32 points in 51 games during the 2021-22 season.

His growth peaked with a standout 2022-23 season in which he achieved 40 points across 50 AHL appearances, leading to his NHL debut on December 6, 2022, in a game against the Dallas Stars, where he was limited in both ice time and point production before returning to the Marlies. After finishing that season as a restricted free agent, he made the decision to return to his homeland, signing a two-year agreement with Traktor Chelyabinsk on July 4, 2023, followed by a transfer to Dynamo Moscow where he has continued to flourish.

Interestingly, the Leafs retain his NHL rights, hinting that a future return could be a possibility if the right conditions arise.
