Carlos Vela Announces Retirement
Carlos Vela, the former forward for Mexico and Los Angeles FC (LAFC), has officially announced his retirement from professional soccer at the age of 36. This announcement, made via Instagram on Tuesday, marks a significant transition as Vela has also accepted the role of LAFC’s first club ambassador.
Reflecting on His Career
In his heartfelt message, he expressed immense gratitude, stating,
“I’ve had the privilege of enjoying some unforgettable moments throughout my career, but now is the right time to step away from professional play. I can’t find enough words to thank my family, the teams that believed in me, and the fans for their unwavering support. It truly has been an honor to share this journey with all of you.”
Notable Achievements with LAFC
Vela, who has been without a contract since December of last year, played a pivotal role in LAFC’s storied history, helping the team secure its maiden MLS Cup in 2022 and winning two Supporters’ Shields in 2019 and 2022. He briefly returned to LAFC in October 2024 after a hiatus following the conclusion of his previous contract. Although the club decided not to extend his contract for 2025, discussions about his potential return were initial considerations.
Honoring His Legacy
As recognition of his contributions, LAFC will honor Vela with a special Carlos Vela Night scheduled for September 21 during their match against Real Salt Lake. Vela reflected on his time with the club, stating,
“Contributing to the foundation of LAFC and achieving milestones together is a proud chapter in my career. This club holds a deep significance for me and my family, and I celebrate all we have accomplished alongside the amazing supporters of Los Angeles. I look forward to embarking on this new journey in the same city I’ve grown to love.”
Statements from Club Officials
LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington shared his sentiments, emphasizing Vela’s importance to the club’s identity. He described Vela as
“the heartbeat, the captain, and the face of LAFC,”
noting how Vela arrived in Los Angeles determined to create something remarkable, a promise he fulfilled.
A New Chapter
While his active playing days have concluded, Vela’s connection to LAFC will continue as he embarks on his ambassadorial role, aimed at promoting the LAFC brand, enhancing ties with fans, and inspiring the next generation of players. Before his impactful career in MLS, Vela honed his skills at various clubs in Europe, including Arsenal, Salamanca, Osasuna, West Bromwich Albion, and Real Sociedad, where he was recognized as a two-time player of the year. On the international stage, he proudly represented Mexico from 2007 to 2018, earning 72 caps and scoring 19 goals, including participations in the 2010 and 2018 FIFA World Cups, though he notably opted out of the 2014 tournament.
