Tony Allen Arrested on Drug Charges
In an unexpected turn of events, Tony Allen, a former standout defensive player for the Memphis Grizzlies, was taken into custody on drug-related charges in Poinsett County, Arkansas, this past Wednesday. The 43-year-old Allen, who played a crucial role during the Grizzlies’ memorable Core Four era, is now facing two counts of drug possession.
Details of the Incident
The incident unfolded when law enforcement stopped a vehicle on Interstate 555, approximately 50 miles northwest of Memphis. The driver, 33-year-old William Hatton from Memphis, came under scrutiny after officers discovered a package containing a green leafy substance—later confirmed to be marijuana—associated with Allen. A further investigation of the car led to the discovery of a cigarette box that contained a white powdery substance, identified as cocaine.
Allen’s Basketball Career
Tony Allen, who donned the Grizzlies jersey from 2011 to 2017, was originally selected by the Boston Celtics in 2004 following his collegiate career at Oklahoma State University. He concluded his professional journey with the New Orleans Pelicans. Just months prior to this latest incident, in August 2023, Allen had entered a guilty plea concerning his involvement in a federal case related to an NBA health benefits scam, resulting in community service and a three-year probationary sentence.
Legacy with the Grizzlies
In a testament to his impact on the franchise, the Memphis Grizzlies honored Allen by retiring his number 9 jersey in March, making him the third player from the revered Core Four to receive such recognition. His former teammates, Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph, have also had their jerseys retired, while Mike Conley continues his playing career with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
