Impressive AHL Debut for Ivan Fedotov
In an impressive debut for the Cleveland Monsters in the American Hockey League (AHL), former Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Ivan Fedotov delivered a stellar performance, achieving a shutout in his first game since being traded. Last Friday, during an unexpected gap in the NHL schedule, the Monsters faced off against the Utica Comets, marking the opening game of their regular season. Fedotov, who joined the Blue Jackets from the Flyers on September 14, stood out in the matchup, outperforming promising New Jersey Devils goalie prospect Nico Daws by making 21 saves and securing a 1-0 win.
Significant Milestone
This shutout also marks a significant milestone for the 28-year-old netminder, as it is his first professional shutout since February 26, 2024, when he recorded 38 saves in a 4-0 victory over Lokomotiv Yaroslavl during the Gagarin Cup playoffs while playing for CSKA Moskva.
Trade Impact on the Flyers
The Flyers, who dealt Fedotov away, have expressed satisfaction with the benefits of this trade, receiving a sixth-round pick in the 2026 draft and obtaining much-needed cap space. While they may have hoped for a different outcome with Fedotov on their roster, they are focusing on their future with young goaltenders Aleksei Kolosov and Carson Bjarnason, who are now integral to their line-up and both younger than Fedotov.
Future Prospects
Although the NHL may not have suited Fedotov’s earlier career, his promising start in the AHL suggests he may still evolve into a dependable option at the NHL level in the future. As he continues to adjust to this new environment, the 6-foot-7 goalie has the potential to thrive in professional hockey.
