Former Canadiens First-Round Pick Logan Mailloux Assigned to AHL

Logan Mailloux’s Career Transition

Logan Mailloux, a former first-round draft selection by the Montreal Canadiens, is set to continue his professional career in the American Hockey League (AHL). The St. Louis Blues have officially announced his reassignment to the Springfield Thunderbirds, which comes after a rocky start to his time in St. Louis.

Challenges in St. Louis

Mailloux’s tenure with the Blues has been challenging, with the young defenseman failing to score any points while struggling defensively—he has seven turnovers and a discouraging minus-12 rating during his brief stint with the team. This performance led to the decision to send him down to the Thunderbirds, where he will aim to regain his form and possibly earn another opportunity in the NHL.

Trade and Previous Performance

The trade that brought Mailloux to St. Louis occurred this past summer, where he was exchanged for forward Zack Bolduc. Originally chosen by the Canadiens as the 31st overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, he made limited appearances with Montreal, competing in eight games over two seasons and recording five points, which included two goals and three assists.

Additionally, Mailloux showed potential in the AHL, playing 135 games with the Laval Rocket, where he notched 26 goals and 54 assists, accumulating a total of 80 points along with 165 penalty minutes.

Looking Ahead

As Mailloux transitions to Springfield, he faces the critical task of refining his skills and making a case for his return to the NHL.
