Florida Panthers Reinforce Roster with Cole Schwindt Claim Amid Injury Concerns

Florida Panthers Claim Cole Schwindt Off Waivers

In a strategic move to bolster their roster, the Florida Panthers have successfully claimed forward Cole Schwindt off waivers, reuniting him with the team that originally traded him to acquire Matthew Tkachuk from Calgary three seasons ago. This decision comes as the Panthers face significant challenges, including the absence of Tkachuk for several weeks and the anticipated long-term injury to captain Aleksander Barkov, who is dealing with torn knee ligaments.

Management’s Confidence in Schwindt

Florida’s president of hockey operations and general manager, Bill Zito, expressed confidence in Schwindt’s potential, stating:

“We had him before and we know what he can do. There’s a lot of upside. It’s a great opportunity for him.”

Schwindt’s Background and Previous Performance

Cole Schwindt, part of the deal that involved sending star players Jonathan Huberdeau and Mackenzie Weegar, along with draft picks, to acquire Tkachuk in 2022, spent the previous season with the Vegas Golden Knights. In 42 games last season, he recorded one goal and seven assists. His previous stints with both Florida and Calgary have not yielded any points.

Impact on the Panthers’ Roster

With the Panthers grappling with injuries and a need for more players, Schwindt’s acquisition could provide much-needed depth as they commence the season. Notably, Schwindt has a family connection to the Panthers; his brother, Kai Schwindt, also plays in the organization and was recently assigned to the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers after attending training camp with the NHL squad.
