Florian Wirtz on brink of record transfer to Liverpool ahead of weekend

Florian Wirtz Transfer to Liverpool

According to reports from ESPN, German midfielder Florian Wirtz is on the verge of a transfer to Liverpool, with the deal scheduled for completion by Friday. This move comes after Liverpool successfully negotiated a record transfer with Bayer Leverkusen, which is anticipated to cost around £116 million (€136 million) when adding potential performance-related bonuses.

Details of the Transfer Deal

After facing rejections from Leverkusen on two previous offers, the club finally agreed on an upfront fee of £100 million, which could increase by an additional £16 million if certain conditions are met. This hefty sum would exceed the previous record set by Chelsea for Moisés Caicedo, who transferred from Brighton & Hove Albion in summer 2023.

Next Steps in the Transfer Process

Wirtz, aged 22, is expected to travel to Merseyside for a medical examination as the final step in the transfer process, with hopes of having everything wrapped up before the weekend. Liverpool faced stiff competition for the promising midfielder, notably from top clubs such as Bayern Munich, Manchester City, and Real Madrid.

Expectations and Future Signings

The club’s management is optimistic that Wirtz could have a similar transformative effect on the team as Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker did since their signings in 2018.

This acquisition marks Liverpool’s second major signing of the summer following the recruitment of Jeremie Frimpong, another former Leverkusen player, who was signed for £29.5 million due to a triggered release clause last month. Additionally, ESPN has reported that Liverpool is also close to finalizing a transfer for Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez, valued at approximately €45 million ($51.99 million).
