Copa Libertadores Semifinals: Flamengo and Liga de Quito Advance

In a thrilling Thursday night of Copa Libertadores action, both Brazil’s Flamengo and Ecuador’s Liga de Quito secured their spots in the semifinals, overcoming their respective opponents with determination and skill.

Flamengo’s Dramatic Victory

Flamengo, the proud owner of three Copa Libertadores titles, faced Estudiantes de La Plata in a gripping second leg match. Although they lost 1-0, resulting in a 2-2 aggregate score, Flamengo triumphed in the penalty shootout, thanks to the stellar performance of goalkeeper Agustin Rossi, who remarkably saved attempts from Gaston Benedetti and Santiago Ascacibar.

This victory marks Flamengo’s return to the semifinal stage for the first time since 2022, where they will clash with Racing Club, who emerged victorious against Vélez Sarsfield in their quarterfinal tie.

Benedetti’s goal in the 45th minute of regular play was crucial, as it leveled the aggregate match and pushed the contest into the tense penalty shootout.

Liga de Quito’s Strong Performance

Meanwhile, Liga de Quito (LDU) achieved a decisive 1-0 victory over São Paulo in Brazil, with Colombian striker Jeison Medina netting the only goal just before halftime, in the 41st minute. This result not only advanced LDU with an aggregate win of 3-0 but also marked their long-awaited return to the semifinals for the first time since their 2008 championship campaign, where they famously defeated Fluminense in a penalty shootout.

In their next fixture, LDU will face Palmeiras, another powerhouse from Brazil, after eliminating the defending champions, Botafogo, in an earlier round.

The upcoming semifinals promise to deliver intense matchups as these clubs vie for a chance at glory in South America’s most prestigious club competition.
