Winter Olympics Update: Finnish Women’s Hockey Team Match Postponed

In a significant development at the Winter Olympics, the Finnish women’s hockey team’s opening match against Canada, originally set for Thursday, has been delayed due to a stomach virus that has severely impacted their player availability. The match will now take place on February 12.

Impact of Norovirus Outbreak

This decision comes after Finland concluded a practice session with only eight skaters and two goalies fit to play, as 13 players are currently in quarantine due to the outbreak of norovirus, which first surfaced on Tuesday night.

The postponement will afford the Finnish team additional recovery time before their next challenge against the United States on Saturday. Prior to this rescheduling, officials were concerned that fielding a compromise team could lead to a potential forfeiture of the match against Canada.

“Although everyone involved feels the disappointment of this postponement, we believe it is a prudent decision that aligns with the Olympic spirit and upholds the integrity of the event,” stated Olympic officials in their announcement.

They also expressed gratitude towards players, partners, and supporters for their understanding and cooperation, and eagerly anticipated a safe rescheduling of the encounter.

Coach’s Perspective

Head Coach Tero Lehterä had acknowledged before the postponement that fielding only 10 healthy players against their Canadian counterparts would be unjust. He mentioned that while many of his players were recovering, they were still not fit enough for competition. He also noted the potential health risks this situation poses to Team Canada should the game proceed.

Lehterä recalled that symptoms of the virus emerged after a full practice on Tuesday, making the situation increasingly concerning for the Finland squad. As the new date for the match approaches, it coincides with the tournament’s off days, just before the commencement of the quarterfinals.
