Filip Gustavsson Takes Over Goaltending Duties for Wild in Game 2 Against Avalanche

Strategic Goalie Change for Game 2

In a strategic move ahead of Game 2 against the Colorado Avalanche, the Minnesota Wild will place Filip Gustavsson in goal, replacing Jesper Wallstedt. This switch comes after Wallstedt had a challenging performance in Game 1, where he conceded eight goals, contributing to a hefty 9-6 defeat. Wild head coach John Hynes confirmed the decision just hours before the game was set to begin.

Gustavsson’s Performance and Experience

Gustavsson, who has not seen action since an outing against St. Louis on April 13, where he also faced pressure allowing five goals, finished the regular season with a solid record of 28 wins, 15 losses, and six overtime losses. He maintained a goals-against average of 2.69 over the season. In the first round, Wallstedt had been tested across six games against Dallas, allowing a total of 14 goals. His struggles continued into Game 1 against the Avalanche, where he faced 42 shots in total.

Coach Hynes expressed confidence in both goaltenders, emphasizing their abilities and performance throughout the season, stating, “We believe either one of them can win us a game. It’s a good opportunity to get Gus in the net. He’s hungry to get in.”

The 27-year-old Gustavsson brings with him postseason experience, having played 11 playoff games for the Wild, with a record of 4 wins and 6 losses, alongside a commendable 2.54 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage. Coach Hynes reflected on Gustavsson’s mindset during this transition, noting that he has remained engaged and supportive while eagerly preparing for his chance to play.

Injuries and Roster Adjustments

Despite this lineup change, the Wild will still be missing key players, including forward Joel Eriksson Ek and defenseman Jonas Brodin, who are both sidelined due to lower-body injuries. Hynes indicated potential adjustments to the roster may still occur, based on player availability as game time approaches.
