FIFA Introduces Peace Award
In a notable initiative aimed at promoting harmony, FIFA has unveiled its plans to introduce a peace award, scheduled to be presented during the World Cup draw on December 5 in Washington, D.C. The FIFA Peace Prize aims to honor individuals who have made remarkable contributions towards fostering peace amid global conflicts, as stated by the organization’s president, Gianni Infantino, on Wednesday.
“We must acknowledge those dedicated to alleviating tensions in a world that is increasingly fragmented.”
Infantino emphasized the necessity of this recognition, which will not only serve as a tribute to exceptional efforts but will also be awarded annually, symbolizing the collective gratitude of football fans globally. Infantino is slated to present the inaugural prize this year.
Context of the Announcement
Interestingly, the announcement comes at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump, a known ally of Infantino, recently missed out on a Nobel Peace Prize nomination that had garnered support from prominent Republicans and international leaders. Both Infantino and Trump are expected to address a separate event later this week in Miami.
Furthermore, FIFA has strengthened its ties with Trump by appointing Ivanka Trump to the board of a $100 million education initiative supported by ticket sales from the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
