FIFA Partners with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund

In a notable expansion of its commercial partnerships, FIFA has secured an investment from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) for the upcoming Club World Cup, which will take place in the U.S. This deal marks a significant engagement, as the PIF is the majority owner of one of the competing teams, Al Hilal, which is part of the Saudi national league that it has dominated since 2023.

The PIF, known for its financial backing of various high-profile sports ventures such as LIV Golf, will officially serve as a partner during the tournament scheduled from June 14 to July 13. Though the financial details of this agreement remain undisclosed, it is understood that the investment supports a substantial broadcasting arrangement that aids in funding the $1 billion prize pool to be distributed among the 32 teams, including Al Hilal, which stands to receive an initial payment of approximately $9.55 million.

Saudi Investments in Global Sports

This partnership is amidst a backdrop of increasing Saudi investments in global sports, having previously confirmed a billion-dollar investment in the streaming platform DAZN just two days before FIFA designated Saudi Arabia as the host for the men’s World Cup in 2034. Additionally, FIFA announced a sponsorship deal with the Saudi national oil entity, Aramco.

This Club World Cup will be historic as it involves teams that have either triumphed in continental championships or have shown exceptional performance over the qualifying period, with the U.S. marking its debut as host of the event. One of the participating teams, Inter Miami, renowned for having superstar Lionel Messi, adds to the tournament’s profile.

Competitive Landscape

Al Hilal, which previously clinched the Asian Champions League title in 2021, will compete against formidable opponents like Real Madrid, Pachuca, and RB Salzburg. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has been a pivotal figure in fostering close relationships with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who heads the PIF and has taken a personal interest in developing the Club World Cup initiative.

Kerbing interest in the event, the coveted gold trophy is currently showcased in the U.S., with plans for U.S. President Donald Trump to award it to the tournament victor at the final held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The President has also been associated with the LIV Golf tour, further intertwining U.S. leadership with Saudi sporting investments.
