FIFA Bans Pumas and Atlas from Player Signings
In a surprising decision, FIFA has placed both the Pumas and Atlas football clubs on its list of teams banned from executing player signings, effective May 28. This prohibition also extends to Atlético Morelia and Cancún FC, both of which compete in the Expansion League, as indicated by a recent announcement on FIFA’s official website.
Reasons Behind the Ban
The governing body for global football has not provided clarity regarding when these restrictions might be lifted or the specific reasons behind this disciplinary action. However, such measures typically stem from financial issues, often involving debts related to player transfers or outstanding salaries.
Public Statements from the Clubs
While it remains unconfirmed whether Pumas and Atlas are experiencing these financial difficulties, it is a common cause for clubs facing similar sanctions. In light of this, both teams have released public statements addressing their current circumstances.
Pumas, officially known as Club Universidad Nacional, issued a communication on the day the ban was announced.
Meanwhile, just prior to this sanction, Atlas had declared the full acquisition of player Adrián Mora and were reportedly close to finalizing the transfer of Gustavo Ferrareis, illustrating the timing of FIFA’s enforcement of these restrictions on their operations in the transfer market.
