Festive Swims Canceled Due to Weather Warning
In light of a yellow weather warning issued by the Met Office, several festive swims in Devon and Cornwall have been called off. This warning, which applies to the South West region from early on Christmas Day until midnight, raises concerns about strong winds and cold weather, prompting safety measures from event organizers.
Postponements and Cancellations
For the first time in 57 years, the Coverack swim in Cornwall has been postponed due to what organizers deemed unsafe conditions, with a rescheduled date set for New Year’s Day instead. They expressed their concern over safety in light of the adverse weather forecast.
Further, the Start Bay Inn in Devon also announced the cancellation of its traditional Boxing Day swim. In a message shared via social media, they expressed their disappointment, citing the rough northeastern winds that would prevent safe swimming conditions at Torcross.
The RNLI Teignmouth also made the tough call to cancel its popular annual Boxing Day sea walk, which typically draws large crowds of festive participants eager to support the lifesaving organization. A spokesperson acknowledged the disappointment this announcement may cause, emphasizing that prioritizing safety was imperative.
Additionally, the Royal Air Force Air Cadets 200 Squadron in Torquay conveyed on social media that Torbay Council’s annual Boxing Day Dip at Torre Abbey was also cancelled, following RNLI advice due to rough sea conditions formed by significant swells and east winds.
Safety First
Organizers of these events stress that while the cancellations are unfortunate, the safety of all involved must remain the top priority during these festive celebrations. Participants and onlookers alike are urged to remain cautious during this weather warning period.
