FC Barcelona Welcomes 23,000 Fans to Camp Nou for Training Ahead of Potential Return

FC Barcelona’s Return to Spotify Camp Nou

In a significant step toward their return to the iconic Spotify Camp Nou, FC Barcelona conducted an open training session on Friday, drawing an impressive crowd of 23,000 fans. The session marks a substantial moment for the club, as they have not held a competitive match at their home ground since 2023. Due to a massive €1.5 billion renovation project, the team temporarily relocated to the Olympic Stadium in the city.

Fan Engagement and Upcoming Matches

This training event served not only as a fan engagement opportunity but also as a crucial rehearsal in anticipation of their anticipated return for official matches later this month. Club President Joan Laporta has indicated that they aim to resume LaLiga play at Camp Nou either on November 22 against Athletic Club or possibly against Alavés on November 29, which coincides with the club’s 126th anniversary celebrations. Should these plans not materialize, the next scheduled home match is against Atlético Madrid on December 2.

Permits and Capacity Challenges

However, the timeline for their return heavily relies on the Barcelona council granting the necessary permits. Currently, the club has a limited license for a crowd of 25,991 fans, which was issued in October. They are holding out for expanded capacity—targeting up to 45,401 fans—before officially transitioning back to their historic venue.

Renovation Progress and Future Plans

Although progress on the stadium rewiring is visible—the first two tiers are nearly complete—the third tier and roofing installations remain pending. The long-term renovation project is expected to be fully finalized by 2027, with capacity expected to eventually reach 105,000.

Challenges and Setbacks

Barcelona’s delay in returning home has exceeded initial projections, with earlier hopes set for late 2024. Earlier this year, the club temporarily adjusted their expectations to September but faced further setbacks in obtaining essential permits. As a result, they were forced to begin the season at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, which accommodates only 6,000 fans, before reverting to the Olympic Stadium for their last five home matches. The team is eager for their recent victory over Elche, a 3-1 win, to mark the end of their time at the Olympic venue and a new beginning at Camp Nou.
