Fairfield Women’s Basketball Advances to MAAC Championship

In a decisive match held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the No. 25 Fairfield women’s basketball team notched a significant 65-48 victory over Merrimack, earning a place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championship game.

Key Performers

Leading the charge for Fairfield were Jillian Huerter, who contributed an impressive 19 points, and Meghan Andersen, who closely followed with 18 points along with nine rebounds. The Stags, holding a 27-4 record and seeded second, will now face the top-seeded Quinnipiac team in the finals on Monday. Quinnipiac secured their spot by narrowly overcoming fourth-seeded Iona 63-62 in an overtime thriller earlier on Sunday.

Game Highlights

Huerter demonstrated effective shooting skills throughout the game, finishing with a 7-of-13 shooting performance, which included five successful three-pointers out of eight attempts. Meanwhile, Andersen, despite a challenging outing from beyond the arc where she missed all eight attempts, showcased her proficiency inside the paint, converting 7 of 9 shots. Janelle Brown also played a pivotal role, adding 10 points to the team total. Notably absent from the scoring sheet was Kaety L’Amoreaux, the conference player of the year, who was limited to just three shots and scored no points in her 26 minutes on the court.

Merrimack’s Efforts

For Merrimack, Se’Lah Reddick was the standout performer with 17 points, while Paloma Garcia chipped in 10 points, but their efforts fell short against a strong Fairfield defense. The Stags maintained control throughout the second half; although they only led by two points in the third quarter, a late push allowed them to finish the period with a 7-2 scoring run. Brown’s four-point play at the start of the fourth quarter extended their lead into double digits, which they successfully retained until the final buzzer.

Looking Ahead

This victory marks Fairfield’s 14th appearance in the MAAC title game, where they previously defeated Quinnipiac 84-65 during a December matchup. The stakes will be high as both teams prepare for this championship showdown.
