Xavier Parent’s Journey
Xavier Parent, who went undrafted, has carved out a niche for himself within the Devils organization. Launching his professional career with the Adirondack Thunder, the ECHL affiliate, Parent quickly showcased his talent, accumulating 51 points in 50 games. His impressive performance earned him a brief call-up to the AHL, where he contributed solidly with three goals and three assists in just 14 games.
The 2023-24 season saw him fully transition to the AHL, resulting in a productive campaign with 71 matches, 15 goals, and 30 assists. Considering his performance and the inherent potential as he approaches his mid-20s, Parent is likely to return to the Devils. His contributions to the AHL team highlight his value as a reliable player, and while he may not yet have established himself as an NHL regular, he still holds promise as a bottom-six forward. Topias Vilen’s Development
In contrast, Topias Vilen’s journey began differently, receiving the Devils’ attention as a fifth-round draft pick in 2021. Prior to joining the North American ranks, Vilen spent two seasons honing his skills in Finland, ultimately signing his entry-level contract at the end of the 2022-23 season. His debut in North America came the following year, where he played primarily for the Utica Comets and demonstrated his potential as a reliable defenseman, recording 29 points (two goals and 27 assists) in 58 games during his first full AHL season.
Vilen continued on a similar path the next season, producing one goal and 23 assists over the same number of games, further establishing himself within the organization. In the most recent season, he received additional opportunities, posting 27 points in 61 games with an AHL appearance followed by a brief NHL stint. Unfortunately, like Parent, he too was unable to register any points in his NHL outings.
Despite this, Vilen possesses significant upside. At just 22, defensemen typically mature and refine their skills well into their late 20s, and he has demonstrated both defensive capabilities alongside offensive skills, although he has yet to significantly impact games at the NHL level. With competition for places in New Jersey stiffened by seasoned defensemen, Vilen’s development this season becomes crucial. It could forecast whether he becomes a key player for the Devils or remains a staple in the AHL.
Future Prospects
With both players presenting limited risk and potential for upside, the argument for retaining both Parent and Vilen is strong. From a financial perspective, their contracts will not pose a burden to the salary cap, and it makes more sense to keep them under team control as they develop.
