Evgeni Malkin confirms summer talks on contract extension with Dubas after comeback game against Avalanche

Pittsburgh Penguins Veteran Evgeni Malkin Returns

In a significant return to action, veteran Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin rejoined the lineup on Monday night following a five-game suspension, showcasing his skills during a decisive 7-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche at Ball Arena.

Contract Negotiations Update

After the match, Malkin updated reporters on his contract negotiations, indicating plans to meet with Kyle Dubas, the Penguins’ president of hockey operations and general manager, later this summer regarding a potential contract extension.

Malkin’s return was highly anticipated, and his performance did not disappoint. Leading up to Monday, sports insider Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet suggested there were upcoming discussions between Malkin and the franchise about extending his contract.

Focus on the Season

While speaking with The Athletic‘s Josh Yohe, Malkin offered limited details on the situation but emphasized the importance of focusing on the remainder of the season.

“I can’t say anything,”

he stated regarding specifics but confirmed that he and Dubas had a previous conversation about the need to discuss his future once the season concludes.

“I’m okay with that,”

he remarked, adding that they would discuss his contract after addressing the current season’s final 15 games.

Commitment to the Team

Malkin expressed both optimism and commitment, stating,

“I want to just play. I told him I want to play next year.”

The Penguins are currently in a favorable position in the NHL’s Metropolitan division, tied for wins with their previous season’s total and holding an 85.3% probability of reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2022.

Team Resurgence

The Penguins are enjoying a resurgence under first-year head coach Dan Muse. Through 67 games this season, the team’s resiliency is evident, showcasing improvements in multiple areas, with an increase in both regulation wins and overall points compared to last year. With playoff aspirations on the horizon, Malkin remains focused on contributing to the team’s success as discussions about his future linger in the summer air.
