Errol Spence Jr. prepares to make a comeback against Tim Tszyu after extended hiatus

Errol Spence Jr. Gears Up for Comeback

After a lengthy absence from the boxing ring, Errol Spence Jr. is gearing up for his return this summer. The former unified welterweight champion, who has been sidelined for three years, will be stepping up to the 154-pound weight class to take on Tim Tszyu, a former WBO super welterweight champion. While the specific date and venue for this much-anticipated matchup are yet to be announced, the news was first reported by Ring Magazine.

Tim Tszyu’s Preparatory Fight

Before facing Spence, Tszyu is scheduled to have a preparatory fight at the end of March, likely in Gold Coast or Melbourne, Australia. This bout will feature an American opponent and will be organized by No Limit, potentially including a title fight between Lewis Crocker and Liam Paro for the IBF welterweight title.

Tim Tszyu’s Recent Challenges

Tim Tszyu (26-3, 18 KOs) previously held the WBO super welterweight title until losing it to Sebastian Fundora in March 2024. He subsequently fought to regain his title but suffered an early knockout against Bakhram Murtazaliev. In July, he faced Fundora once again, resulting in a second loss that prompted a critical reassessment of his training setup. Following this, Tszyu parted ways with his manager Glen Jennings and uncle Igor Goloubev, amidst ongoing legal issues, including allegations of a contract breach that Jennings has brought to the courts in New South Wales.

Errol Spence Jr.’s Recent Struggles

Errol Spence Jr. (28-1, 22 KOs) last fought in July 2023, where he faced Terence Crawford and lost via ninth-round TKO in a match for the undisputed welterweight championship. This defeat marked Spence’s first career loss, and since then, he has been facing some personal challenges. In addition to his return to the sport, Spence is entangled in a legal battle with his former trainer Derrick James, who is suing him for approximately $5 million over unpaid training fees. The trial is set to commence on March 24, adding to the uncertainty surrounding Spence’s preparations for his comeback bout.
