Emma Raducanu Reconnects with the US Open
Emma Raducanu has finally reconnected with the US Open, viewing it as a “happy place” four years after her historic triumph at Flushing Meadows. The 22-year-old, who made headlines in 2021 by winning the tournament as an unseeded qualifier, faced a challenging path since then, with three consecutive years of early exits—failing to secure a single victory in New York.
Overcoming Past Challenges
Last year’s return was marked by difficulties as she fought back tears following a loss to Sofia Kenin. However, heading into her next match against Japanese qualifier Ena Shibahara on Sunday, Raducanu expresses a newfound positivity concerning her US Open experiences.
“When I returned in 2022, I really struggled and didn’t enjoy being back. This is the first time I feel I can revisit the US Open, cherishing the memories I made and regarding it as a happy space,”
she shared.
Improving Performance with New Coaching
Currently on the brink of re-entering the world’s top 30, Raducanu has reported a significant improvement in her form, largely thanks to her new full-time coach, Francisco Roig. This experienced Spaniard, known for his lengthy association with Rafael Nadal, has already begun working with her. Although Raducanu enjoyed a productive season with Mark Petchey, who was unable to commit full-time due to broadcasting obligations, she found success in a recent outing at the Cincinnati Open where she nearly upset world number one Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling tie-break.
Raducanu reflected on her recent progress, acknowledging Petchey’s contribution while emphasizing her need for consistent guidance moving forward.
“Mark was instrumental in my development in recent months, but we understood the challenges associated with his scheduling. I’m grateful for our time together, and after Wimbledon, I felt good in my match against Aryna, and it boosted my confidence going into the US swing. We’ve been investing considerable time on the court, finding the right balance between seriousness and enjoyment.”
A Calming Presence
With Roig’s rich experience, having served alongside some of the greats in tennis, Raducanu feels a calming presence in her practice.
“He has a wealth of experience. His composed demeanor during high-pressure events is reassuring, allowing me to trust my capabilities and maintain my performance during tough moments.”
Embracing the Journey
While she acknowledges that the carefree excitement of her 2021 summer victories is gone, Raducanu now enjoys a renewed sense of lightness and awareness.
“I relish my time on the court just as much, but now I more fully understand the potential challenges and negativity that can come with success, which impacted me in the years following my victory. Occasionally, I still feel its effects, but I find myself appreciating the day-to-day aspects of my tennis journey more, surrounded by supportive people who uplift me.”
