Elena Rybakina’s Triumph at the WTA Finals
Elena Rybakina concluded her 2025 tennis season on a high note, claiming victory at the WTA Finals held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This triumph, however, was bittersweet for her opponent, Aryna Sabalenka, who clearly struggled to cope with the loss. In every tennis tournament, only one player can emerge victorious, and the WTA Finals, featuring the world’s top eight players, exemplified this reality as Rybakina faced off against Sabalenka in the championship match.
The Emotional Aftermath
The clash showcased the tremendous power both athletes possess, resulting in a thrilling showdown. Following the match, emotion overwhelmed Sabalenka, who departed in tears and hurried to a press conference before heading to the Maldives, perhaps seeking solace from her disappointment. In the aftermath of her defeat, Sabalenka expressed her anger, remarking,
“Even a stick shoots once a year,”
a rather derogatory comment hinting at her belief that Rybakina’s performance was merely a stroke of luck. Such comments are reminiscent of her reactions after previous finals losses this year, including those against Madison Keys at the Australian Open and Coco Gauff at Roland Garros.
Sabalenka’s Year in Review
Sabalenka ended the year ranked No. 1 in the world and set a new record for the most prize money earned in a single WTA season. Yet, her year could have been even more illustrious. She found herself on the brink of achieving a Calendar Slam, but narrowly missed the mark, as all three of her losses in major tournaments were decided in three sets. The defeat at the WTA Finals likely added to her frustrations, marking another significant setback in what had already been a challenging year.
Rybakina’s Perspective
In a follow-up interview with Tengri News, Rybakina was asked about Sabalenka’s post-match comments. She appeared unfazed, showing understanding towards her rival’s emotional state.
“I heard about it after the match, but I took it in context. Aryna and I have faced each other numerous times this year, and I hold no ill feelings toward her or her team, so I don’t let it get to me,”
Rybakina stated.
Embracing the Off-Season
As for Rybakina’s personal life after such an intense season, she reflected on how she spent her time following the conclusion of the 2025 tour. Tennis requires rigorous discipline, especially regarding diet and routine, leaving little room for relaxation during the season. Thus, the off-season is a precious time for players. Rybakina shared that she treated herself to sweet pastries and allowed herself to indulge, including a special cake decorated with the WTA logo.
“After wrapping up my season, there were all sorts of treats, and I truly celebrated,”
she said, adding that she enjoyed catching up on sleep and even attended a concert, embracing the opportunity to unwind after a demanding year on the court.
