Ekow Essuman’s Upcoming Fight
Ekow Essuman is gearing up for a critical fight that could pave his way to a world title shot. The 36-year-old welterweight, hailing from Nottingham, is set to face Jack Catterall, who is also among the top British fighters ranked within the World Boxing Organisation’s (WBO) top 10. This match will be held on the undercard of the much-anticipated rematch between Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this Saturday. While this contest isn’t declared an official title eliminator, its outcome will significantly influence both fighters’ chances of competing for the championship belt in the future.
Essuman’s Evolving Approach
In an interview with BBC East Midlands, Essuman expressed how his approach to the ring has evolved.
“I’ve been honing my skills, becoming more strategic and cunning as a fighter. I can feel the improvements—I’m hitting harder, faster, and with much greater intent,”
he remarked confidently. His current record stands at 22 victories and just one defeat, placing him third in the WBO rankings, following what he describes as a transformative experience in his decade-long career.
Reflecting on His Journey
Reflecting on his journey, Essuman believes that the work put into his training has laid a solid foundation for his boxing career.
“Building a strong house requires solid foundations. I’ve worked relentlessly to create that stability, and now I’m focused on perfecting the finishing touches,”
he explained.
A Significant Test Ahead
This upcoming bout represents a significant test for Essuman, particularly after his standout performance six months ago, when he achieved an unexpected victory over former undisputed world champion Josh Taylor in Glasgow. Meanwhile, Jack Catterall, who avenged a controversial split-decision loss to Taylor last year, is also climbing the rankings, although his aspirations took a hit following a defeat to American Arnold Barboza Jr earlier this year.
Personal Ambitions
For Essuman, winning against Catterall would not just be a career milestone but would also fulfill a deeper personal ambition.
“To become a champion, you need to have an unwavering passion for your goals. This fight means everything to me, not just for myself but also for my children, my wife, and my family. I’m committed to this dream,”
he stated passionately.
