Oilers Part Ways with Head Coach Kris Knoblauch
The Edmonton Oilers are parting ways with head coach Kris Knoblauch, according to a report by TSN’s Ryan Rishaug. This decision follows a previous report by Frank Seravalli indicating that the Oilers had attempted to gain authorization from the Vegas Golden Knights to interview Bruce Cassidy, a move that highlights the Oilers’ ambitions for improvement after a disappointing playoff exit this year.
Knoblauch’s Tenure and Challenges
Kris Knoblauch, aged 47, took over coaching duties in November 2024 from Jay Woodcroft and initially revitalized the team, guiding them to two consecutive appearances in the Stanley Cup Finals. However, both seasons ended in defeats to the Florida Panthers. This year, after being eliminated in the first round by the Anaheim Ducks, the Oilers find themselves still chasing their first championship since the 1989-90 season.
What complicates the situation is that Knoblauch was awarded a three-year contract extension as recently as October, confirming his position through the 2028-29 season. This sudden reversal raises eyebrows about the organization’s confidence and strategy moving forward.
Search for a New Head Coach
In their search for a new head coach, the Oilers have their sights set on Bruce Cassidy. Although Cassidy was recently released by the Golden Knights with eight games left in the regular season, he remains under contract and is still receiving payment from Vegas. Consequently, any team wishing to interview him must seek approval from the Knights. Reports indicate that Vegas has been slow to grant the Oilers this permission, possibly due to the rivalry between the two Pacific Division teams. Notably, the Los Angeles Kings are also rumored to be interested in Cassidy.
At 60 years old, Cassidy boasts an impressive coaching resume, highlighted by a record of 470 wins against 254 losses and 96 ties in the NHL. He took the Boston Bruins to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2018-2019 and then, in his inaugural season as the coach of the Knights, led them to their first Stanley Cup victory.
Current Situation and Future Outlook
Meanwhile, in a notable shift, former coach John Tortorella has since taken over the Knights, leading the team into a second-round playoff series against the Ducks, where they currently hold a 3-2 lead.
For the Oilers, this season marks a significant decline under Knoblauch’s leadership. Both Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have expressed their concerns regarding the team’s regression, which finished with its lowest points percentage since the 2018-19 season, a year in which they failed to qualify for the playoffs. In today’s NHL, head coaches face immense pressure, and despite past successes with Knoblauch, the Oilers are reportedly ready to move on and embrace a new direction.
