Upcoming Boxing Event at Windsor Park
Eddie Hearn, the promoter for Lewis Crocker, has announced plans for a significant boxing event at Windsor Park. This event is expected to be the venue for Crocker’s inaugural defense of the IBF welterweight title during the spring.
Crocker’s Title Triumph
This announcement follows Crocker’s championship title win in September, where he achieved a hard-fought split-decision victory over Paddy Donovan, a boxer from Limerick.
Plans for the Next Bout
Crocker is primed for a comeback at home after his title triumph, with discussions suggesting his next bout could take place on April 11, as reported by BBC Sport NI. Hearn has expressed enthusiasm for organizing another grand event in Belfast, stating:
“We are collaborating with the government there for a grand outdoor occasion.”
He emphasized Crocker’s achievements and the excitement surrounding his return to the ring in Belfast as a world champion.
Potential Opponents
Conor Benn, who recently secured a rematch victory against Chris Eubank Jr., has been mentioned as a potential opponent for Crocker. However, Hearn does not foresee a match with Benn materializing in the immediate future. Benn is reportedly focused on winning a WBC title, motivated by his desire to follow in the footsteps of his father, Nigel Benn, a renowned champion in both middleweight and super-middleweight divisions.
Current Title Landscape
Currently, the WBC welterweight title is held by Mario Barrios, who is expected to defend it against Ryan Garcia, with Benn positioned as the mandatory challenger for the titleholder.
Future Considerations
Hearn noted:
“Lewis sometimes feels overlooked in discussions about Conor Benn; however, Benn is primarily fixated on securing the WBC title.”
This implies that while a bout with Benn remains a consideration for the future, it may not happen around the anticipated timeframe. Preparations for a potentially headline-worthy fight for Crocker are being made for either March or April at the same beloved venue in Belfast.
