Anthony Joshua’s Potential Return to Boxing
Eddie Hearn, the promoter for Matchroom, announced that a significant decision regarding Anthony Joshua’s potential return to the ring in 2025 will be reached this week. Joshua has faced a prolonged hiatus from boxing, remaining inactive for nearly 14 months. His last match was a shocking fifth-round defeat at the hands of fellow British heavyweight Daniel Dubois back in September 2022, which disrupted his training momentum under Ben Davison and derailed his aspirations for another title shot.
Insights from Eddie Hearn
During the grand arrivals for the highly anticipated rematch between Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn II, Hearn shared insights with Sky Sports about Joshua’s next steps:
“We will make a decision this week regarding whether he will step back into the ring this year. We need to finalize this by the weekend,”
he stated. Hearn hinted at the potential for a warm-up fight for Joshua, possibly scheduled before the end of the current year, but emphasized that details might remain under wraps until closer to the event, perhaps even on fight week itself.
“It wouldn’t matter where the fight occurs; the specifics may not be revealed until days before it happens. The goal here is to get him back into action, which I believe would be beneficial for him despite the fact that it wouldn’t be a high-stakes financial encounter. No tickets would be sold based on his participation; it would simply be to facilitate his return to fighting,”
Hearn elaborated. He expressed his enthusiasm for the prospect of Joshua stepping back into the ring, hoping to see him perform fiercely.
Looking Ahead
Joshua’s defeat to Dubois ended a series of four consecutive victories following two significant losses to Oleksandr Usyk. On the horizon, there’s still the potential showdown with his long-time rival Tyson Fury, who is anticipated to make his own return to boxing in 2026. The boxing community continues to watch closely as Joshua’s next chapter unfolds.
