Dylan Larkin Turns 29: Eager for Red Wings to Return to Playoffs

Dylan Larkin’s Disappointment

Dylan Larkin, captain of the Detroit Red Wings, is experiencing profound disappointment as the team faces yet another season absent from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, marking the ninth year in a row. Larkin, who is now 29 years old, is the only member of the current roster who played during the Red Wings’ last playoff appearance in the 2015-16 NHL season, when he was just starting his career. Since that period, the organization has been undergoing a challenging rebuild, exemplified by the disastrous 2019-20 campaign in which they recorded the lowest win total since the expansion Atlanta Thrashers in 1999–2000.

Progress Under Steve Yzerman

However, under the guidance of former captain and current general manager Steve Yzerman, the organization is slowly turning the corner. The Red Wings came achingly close to clinching a playoff spot in 2024, finishing just one point shy, ultimately falling short due to a tie-breaker situation. Despite the progress, the past season (2024-25) marked the first time in five years that the team failed to increase its points from the previous season.

Larkin’s Aspirations

As he celebrates his 29th birthday today, Larkin reflects on his aspirations for his team. He hopes that by his 30th birthday next year, he can finally experience playoff hockey. After the locker room clean-out day in late April, Larkin conveyed his frustrations, stating,

“It’s been difficult… I think about it every day. We were about four or five wins short this year.”

Challenges in March

March has proven to be a particularly troublesome month for the Red Wings over the past three seasons, with each year showcasing significant losing streaks that ultimately undermined their playoff aspirations. Larkin captured the frustrations of both himself and the team, noting,

“It’s frustrating to go through it again and sit here outside the playoffs. March was definitely not a good month for us and defined our season, unfortunately.”

Looking Ahead

Despite the challenges, Larkin remains a steadfast leader, proudly wearing the captain’s “C” while representing the storied franchise. His desire extends beyond personal ambitions, aiming to help the Red Wings reclaim their status as a perennial contender for the Stanley Cup. He dreams of seeing his team enjoying success at Little Caesars Arena as they strive to ascend back into the ranks of NHL elite.

As fans look forward to the upcoming seasons, Larkin stands at the forefront of the Red Wings’ hopeful resurgence.
