Dylan Harper Optimistic About Spurs’ Future Amid Six-Year Playoff Drought

Spurs Family Cookout

In San Antonio this weekend, fans braved the intense heat outside the Victory Capital Performance Center for the “Spurs Family Cookout,” where Dylan Harper, the Spurs’ recent second overall pick, shared his aspirations for the franchise.

Harper’s Optimism

During his introductory press conference, Harper expressed optimism about the team’s chances of breaking its playoff drought, which has lasted six years.

“We’re going to make the playoffs, and I think for the Spurs fans, there’s plenty to be excited about. The potential for our group is limitless,”

he declared.

Wearing the number 2 jersey, previously donned by now-retired Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard, Harper has his sights set on contributing to the franchise’s storied legacy. Moreover, as a member of a team that recently drafted the last two NBA Rookie of the Year winners—Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle—Harper’s aim is to help San Antonio achieve an unprecedented milestone: producing three consecutive ROY victors.

“While I don’t feel pressure to win the award, it is a personal goal of mine to keep the momentum going. My primary focus is improving every single day and absorbing as much knowledge from everyone around me as I can,”

he stated.

Training with Legends

Two days following the draft, Harper participated in training, where he was pleasantly surprised to be working alongside Spurs legends Tim Duncan, Gregg Popovich, and Manu Ginobili.

“You won’t find that kind of talent in any other organization. This is the franchise every aspiring player dreams of joining. Seeing their history makes me want to contribute to that legacy and add more banners to the rafters,”

he reflected.

Teammate Connection

Carter Bryant, the Spurs’ 14th overall pick, is anticipated to be a valuable teammate. An athletic forward known for his defensive prowess out of Arizona, Bryant has had a connection with Harper since they competed against each other during high school on the EYBL circuit. Interestingly, Bryant’s uncle, D’Cean, served as an assistant coach to Leonard in high school, adding a personal connection to the team’s legacy.

“I don’t know much about the city yet, but the Spurs shaped my childhood. Kawhi was one of my favorites, and I admired Timmy D, who was my uncle’s favorite player. The Spurs dynasty set the stage for my love of basketball. Knowing I can now continue that legacy is truly an honor,”

Bryant remarked.

Upcoming Challenges

Both Harper and Bryant are set to showcase their skills at the California Summer League, which kicks off on July 5 in San Francisco against the Miami Heat. Harper is determined to make a mark, claiming that his goal is to “win every game we play.” Although he exudes self-assurance, Spurs general manager Brian Wright has noted Harper’s grounded nature. Harper himself acknowledges that his confidence stems from a strong work ethic.

“I believe I’m one of the hardest workers out there, but it’s important to remain humble because success can vanish as quickly as it arrives,”

he concluded.
